Early production with 6 digit serial number. Rifle does appear to be unfired, does have bluing loss on both sides of front barrel band (see photos). 22 caliber The Model 49 was sold as a tube magazine fed repeater or a single shot with a false tube magazine. 22 lever-action single-shot rifle refurbished. Features: Hardwood stock with pressed checkering and hard plastic butt plate. The Ithaca Model 49 22 caliber lever-action rifle is an extremely popular little gun and they are fairly rare in 22 mag. V notch rear sight, stepped wedge adjustable for elevation. Barrel and mag tube bluing and receiver black all look really good at between 85-90. The plain Walnut stock and forearm have no cracks or repairs, a few marks and dings, but still a good. It was in fair shape, very dirty with a few dings and dents, but all of the parts were accounted for. Although I had to order replacements for two parts beyond repair, the gun was a shooter.

While thumbing through my collection of gun manuals and exploded views, I never ran across a disassembly and reassembly instructions for this particular rifle.Ĭompletely refurbishing this old favorite meant everything had to come off of the gun. The barrel and other visible parts were sent out for bluing and the action and other aluminum parts received a new coat of finish. The wood needed to be stripped and finished as per the customer’s wishes. I decided to share my disassembly/reassembly information as I had to start from scratch and this will save you time should a Model 49 find your bench.Introduced at $20 in 1961 and sold until 1979, Ithaca M49 looks like a conventional lever action repeater with 18 inch barrel. This M49 was a rusty derelict until refinished by Sean Averill of Galt’s Guns A closer look reveals that it’s nothing of the sort, In fact, it’s a single-shot falling block with a dummy magazine tube! If that seems silly, just look at today’s 10-22 carbines disguised through the use of aftermarket stocks as G36 automatic rifles or MG42 machine guns. Loading is quite similar to Martini rifle, but the hammer is external and must be cocked manually. Also unlike the Martini, M49 has very positive extraction. The sights are typical of entry-level 22s, post and notch, with unmarked drift and elevation adjustments. The finish of the painted aluminum receiver tends to wear poorly.

The original design was riding the coattails of popular Western TV shows. It was meant as a recreational plinker and succeeded admirably in that role. Since 22 Short ammunition was cheaper than 22LR back then and also substantially quieter, many of these rifles have rather gunked-up chambers but substantial chamber erosion is unlikely. With the rifle rested on a sandbag, five-shot groups all looked like the picture below. For a budget carbine with iron sights, that’s pretty impressive! My friend who owns this particular rifle has had it since he was eight years old back in the 1960s, and the gun just keeps on working with minimal care. Since function-testing of this carbine before buying is very simple and spare parts are still available, I would rate it as a diamond in the rough.

Frame is made of lightweight alloy and is painted black. The action is opened by operating the lever which hinges the breechblock downward and allows loading of the single cartridge in the barrel. This is a single shot lever action which is made to look like the larger repeating rifles.
